LEAF Global’s 4th Anniversary!

Join us on Wednesday, Feb. 14, for a special celebration — it’s the fourth anniversary of LEAF Global Arts Center at 19 Eagle Street! Stop by from 5-7 p.m. LEAF Resident Teaching Artist musicians and friends will be providing live music from their various traditions as well playing together in their newly formed House Band.
The musicians are:
• Adama Dembele — West African music
• Melissa McKinney -— blues
• McKinney — funk
• Andre Lassalle — rock ’n’ roll guitar
• Ary’an Graham — percussion
• Derian Blane — vocals, world fusion
• Paul Gladstone — jazz.
The LEAF Global Arts Center opened to the public on February 17, 2020. The brick and mortar space is located in the renovated historic building on The Block that once housed Club Del Cardo, across the street from the YMI Cultural Center. The idea for LEAF Global was to take all of LEAF’s programming, locally and internationally, and bring it into one epicenter. Because it’s costly, timely, and difficult to travel the world, the LEAF Global Arts Center brings the world to Asheville through classes, workshops, performances, and hands-on experiences of global art and culture.

The event is finished.

Mayani is a Maasai boy from longido Arusha. He went to boarding school at 6 years old and lost his Maasai language and tradition. Since joining the LEAF program, he has learned to sing Maasai songs, practiced the ‘jump’ tradition and wear Maasai shukas (traditional clothing). Mayani is extremely happy and is currently teaching other youth the culture.
