West African Music & Culture

Join LEAF Resident Teaching Artist Adama Dembele and dive into the sounds, rhythms and customs of West African culture in this online class. Adama Dembele is a master djembefola (djembe player) from the Ivory Coast, West Africa and born into 33 generations of musicians where his family home was known as Djembeso, “the house of djembe.” In this class, Adama seeks to share a holistic understanding of his deep cultural roots including language, the rhythms of the djembe drum and accompanying dances and customary dress, the historical context and storytelling properties of the music, a sense of place and more.

South African History & Culture

Become a part of a never ending discusssion around the life of Nelson Mandela (Madiba). LEAF curator and partner, Mark Henegan takes his audience through the timeline from Mandela’s birth, through apartheid all the way to his death. His legacy. His inspiration. A true story of humanity (ubuntu). Mandela was a man larger than life and our mezzanine is tribute to that great legacy.

Global Creative Writing

Each class we will explore a writing tradition from a different continent, learning about the art form and its origin, and then create collaboratively in that form.  Additionally, students may create their own compositions to submit via email. Poetry, stories, and songs will be shared after class in an online journal on the LEAF website!
