Empowerment Songwriting
with LEAF Resident Teaching Artists Melissa McKinney and Kayla Lynn McKinney
Mondays 3:30-4:30 (Zoom), April 12 – May 28, all ages welcome
$60 per 7-week course
This class will by led by Mother/Daughter team Kayla Lynn and Melissa McKinney. Both
musicians, and educators, they have a passion for mental health awareness specifically with
middle and high school students. Participants will be working through a creative workbook
where they will draw, doodle, create, and write their feelings. They will take a journey that will
incorporate music and help them put their feelings into words. We will discuss how we coped
with our feelings during this Global pandemic and talk about how we can use our experience
over the past year to prepare us for the future. We will put an emphasis on how important it is to
connect with others who understand what you are going through and how this pandemic has
brought us all together. We hope that participants will come out of this class realizing that
although this past year has been really hard, it has made us stronger and we can use that
strength to help others.
Mayani is a Maasai boy from longido Arusha. He went to boarding school at 6 years old and lost his Maasai language and tradition. Since joining the LEAF program, he has learned to sing Maasai songs, practiced the ‘jump’ tradition and wear Maasai shukas (traditional clothing). Mayani is extremely happy and is currently teaching other youth the culture.
