LEAF Schools & Streets Summer Camp!

LEAF Schools & Streets invites your students to join us at LEAF Global Arts for summer camp!

There will be multiple camps which will run 9am to 5pm at LEAF Global Arts at 19 Eagle St in Downtown Asheville. Drop off is between 8:30am and 9am and pick up is from 5pm-5:30pm. Snacks will be provided, and students should bring a peanut free bagged lunch and a water bottle to camp each day, and wear clothes and shoes they can move in. In addition to the main focus of the camp, each week will explore elements of theatre art, music, and dance from around the world.

**SOLD OUT** June 20th – 24th: Hip Hop Dance Camp. For rising 1st through 6th graders. This camp will be led by LEAF Master Resident Teaching Artist Otto Vazquez, and will introduce students to the stylings, history, and culture of hip hop dance. Mr. Otto is sure to teach your kiddo some smooth moves! Students are welcome to sign up for one or both of the Hip Hop Dance Camp weeks.

**SOLD OUT** July 5th –  8th: Songs for Peace – Songwriting & Music Production Summer Camp. All ages 6 and up. Students will learn about songwriting, hone their skills on various instruments, and delve into music production and recording. Students will work together to write and record an original song and as well as create a music video of the process. **Please note there will be no camp on July 4th

July 11th – 15th: West African Drumming and Culture Camp. For rising 1st through 6th graders. This camp will be led by LEAF Master Resident Teaching Artist Adama Dembele, who is a master djembefola (djembe player) from the Ivory Coast, West Africa. This camp will introduce students to the rhythms, language, and culture of Ivory Coast, Mali, and Guinea, West Africa.

August 1st – 5th: Songs for Peace – Songwriting & Music Production Summer Camp. All ages 6 and up. Students will learn about songwriting, hone their skills on various instruments, and delve into music production and recording. August 8th – 12th: Brass and Percussion Camp. For rising 4th-8th graders. Students will work with lead resident teaching artist Ersel Bogan III (also known as Garfield). Mr. Garfield gets students moving and playing in the stylings of Second Line music, a rhythm famously used in New Orleans. Students are encouraged to bring brass instruments if they have them – otherwise they will be provided.

Mayani is a Maasai boy from longido Arusha. He went to boarding school at 6 years old and lost his Maasai language and tradition. Since joining the LEAF program, he has learned to sing Maasai songs, practiced the ‘jump’ tradition and wear Maasai shukas (traditional clothing). Mayani is extremely happy and is currently teaching other youth the culture.
